The aerospace industry is deeply rooted in the history of the German capital region Berlin-Brandenburg. It all began 120 years ago with aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal and his flight experiments. Today, the capital region has developed into the third largest centre of excellence for aerospace in Germany.
The most important segments are:
- Engine development and construction,
- light aircraft construction,
- maintenance and servicing of aircraft,
- Production of small satellites and small satellite subsystems,
- testing, development and production-related services as well as research, development and deployment of unmanned aerial systems (drones).
Berlin and Brandenburg are among the leading European locations for engine development and construction. In addition to influential main contractors such as Rolls-Royce Deutschland and MTU Maintenance, companies such as Deutsche Lufthansa, numerous small and medium-sized enterprises, e.g. Astro- und Feinwerktechnik Adlershof, which specialises in precision engineering, as well as renowned research and educational institutions can also be found here.
These established segments have been joined by unmanned aerial systems. In this particular area, there is a strong dynamic towards innovative applications and services. The small satellite and downstream sector dominate the space industry in the region.
